Chooser Privacy
Privacy policy
For the Chooser! app on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and for this website. Last updated 3 October 2026.
The short version
- Chooser has no accounts. When you first open it, it creates a random, anonymous ID. We don’t ask for your name, email address or phone number.
- The finger chooser, the wheel and the mini games run on your phone.
- When you play online, the name, colour, chat and dare videos you choose to share are seen by the people in your room, and the room is deleted automatically when it ends.
- We use analytics, crash reports and screen recordings of app sessions to fix and improve Chooser, and advertising tools to show ads and measure our marketing. Your advertising identifier is only shared if you allow tracking when iOS asks.
- Questions or requests: info@chooser-app.com.
Who we are
Chooser! is published by Bon App & T Ltd (“we”, “us”), 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom. We decide how and why the personal data described here is used, which makes us the data controller. You can reach us at info@chooser-app.com.
What we collect, and why
An anonymous ID
The first time Chooser starts, Firebase Authentication (a Google service) gives your install a random identifier. It isn’t linked to your name or contact details. We use it to keep the things below together on our servers, and to let online rooms know which player is which.
Online rooms
When you create or join a room, the other players see the display name and colour you choose, the positions of your fingers on the screen during a round, the chat messages you send and any dare video you submit. These are stored in Firebase while the room is open.
Rooms are deleted automatically: a few minutes after everyone has left, after 60 minutes without any activity, and never later than 6 hours after the room was created. Dare videos uploaded to a room are deleted with it. From finished rooms we keep only numbers (how long the room lasted, how many players and messages it had), never names, chat or videos.
AI players
If you play a round against AI players, the card being answered and the display names in that room are sent through our server to OpenAI, which writes the AI players’ answers. What you type in that room’s chat is only sent if you allow it: the app asks first, and you can change your answer at any time in Settings, under Privacy, AI Chat Replies.
Cards you write, rate and see
- Your own truths and dares. When you use “Write your own”, we store the text with your anonymous ID, the card type and category, your device language and the app version. Other players don’t see it. We review what people write, including with AI tools provided by OpenAI, to find ideas for new cards. Please don’t put anyone’s personal details in a card.
- Ratings. Your thumbs up and thumbs down are kept on your device and with your anonymous ID, so Chooser can show you more of what you like.
- Cards you’ve seen. Chooser remembers which cards you’ve already had, on your device and with your anonymous ID, so it doesn’t repeat them.
- Feature usage. For features with free limits, we count how often you’ve used them, with your anonymous ID.
Things that stay on your device
Your settings, themes and wheels live on your iPhone and, if you use it, sync directly to your Apple Watch. Dare videos you record stay on your phone unless you save them to Photos, share them, or submit them in an online room. A photo you pick as a background is only used on your device.
How the app is used, and crashes
- Google Analytics for Firebase records events such as screens viewed, features used and rounds played, together with device model, operating system, app version and an approximate location based on your IP address.
- Firebase Crashlytics sends a report when the app crashes, with the device state and the code involved.
- UXCam records app sessions: a video of the app’s screens as you use them, with taps and events. We watch these to see where people get stuck. It records the app, not your camera, and not other apps.
- Firebase Remote Config downloads settings so we can switch features on or off without an update.
Advertising, attribution and purchases
- Google AdMob may show ads in the free version. In the UK and European Economic Area, Google’s consent form asks for your choices before personalised ads are shown.
- Meta (Facebook SDK) and TikTok (TikTok Business SDK) receive app events such as app launches and purchases (product, price, currency and order number) so we can measure our advertising.
- RevenueCat processes in-app purchases and subscription status for us, and collects device identifiers for attribution.
- Your device’s advertising identifier (IDFA) is only made available to these services if you choose “Allow” when iOS asks whether Chooser may track you. You can change this in iOS Settings, under Privacy & Security, Tracking.
- Payments are handled by Apple. We never see your card or bank details.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, Firebase Cloud Messaging gives your device a push token. We use it to send announcements to everyone who has notifications on, and alerts for things you choose to follow. You can turn notifications off in iOS Settings.
Permissions
Chooser asks for the camera and microphone only to record dares, for your photo library only to save dare videos or pick a background photo, and for notifications and tracking as described above. You can change any of these in iOS Settings.
Who we share data with
We use these providers to run Chooser. They process data on our behalf or, for advertising and attribution, under their own terms.
| Provider | What for |
|---|---|
| Google (Firebase, AdMob, Google Cloud) | Anonymous sign-in, online rooms and stored cards, dare video storage, analytics, crash reports, notifications, remote settings, ads, and hosting our AI server and this website |
| OpenAI | AI players’ answers and replies; reviewing cards people write |
| UXCam | Session recordings and usage events |
| Meta Platforms | Measuring our ads (app events and purchases) |
| TikTok | Measuring our ads (app events and purchases) |
| RevenueCat | Purchases, subscriptions and attribution |
| Apple | App Store payments, notifications delivery, Apple Watch sync |
We may also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect people’s safety or our rights.
Our legal bases
Under UK and EU data protection law we rely on:
- Contract, to provide the features you use, such as online rooms and your purchases;
- legitimate interests, to keep Chooser working and secure, understand how it’s used, fix problems, improve the cards and measure our marketing without tracking you;
- consent, for tracking and personalised ads, sending your chat to AI players, notifications, and access to your camera, microphone and photos. You can withdraw consent at any time in the app or in iOS Settings;
- legal obligation, to keep purchase records for tax and accounting.
How long we keep it
- Online rooms, their chat, finger positions and dare videos: until the room ends, as described above (never more than 6 hours).
- Cards you write, ratings, seen cards and usage counts: for as long as you use Chooser, or until you ask us to delete them.
- Analytics, crash reports and session recordings: for the periods set in each provider’s settings, after which they’re deleted or anonymised.
- Purchase records: as long as the law requires.
International transfers
Some providers process data outside the UK and the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where they do, the transfer relies on adequacy regulations (such as the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework) or on standard contractual clauses.
Your rights and choices
You can ask to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to how we use it, or to receive a copy of it. Write to info@chooser-app.com.
Because Chooser doesn’t have accounts, we usually can’t tell which data on our servers belongs to you. Deleting the app removes everything stored on your device, and the data linked to your anonymous ID isn’t connected to your name or contact details. If you’d like something specific removed, such as a card you wrote, tell us what it said and we’ll find and delete it.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk, or to the data protection authority where you live.
Children
Chooser isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal data from them. If you’re a parent or guardian and think your child has given us personal data, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Security
Data travels between the app and our providers over encrypted connections, and access to our systems is limited to the people who need it. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and fix problems quickly.
This website
chooser-app.com sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising. The demos run entirely in your browser; your sound, theme and dare settings are saved only in your browser’s local storage. The site is hosted on Firebase Hosting, a Google service, which processes visitors’ IP addresses and browser details to deliver the pages and keep the service secure, as described in Firebase’s privacy information.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top. For significant changes we’ll also tell you in the app where we can.
